Re: Annonce Kijiji

Ferrets with indoor home lighting go into heat faster, and then they get thin and smell of musk, often by 4-5 months of age. This is a premature reproductive cycling, and stunts their growth. This will also make them bite. A ferret should not be losing weight and going into their reproductive cycle until 10 months of age at earliest. I can control this by having my ferrets in special buildings or in natural light in day pens outdoors. Delaying the surgery is not good, in my opinion. If you go to Ferrets.org, which is a Canadian ferret organization, they recommend surgery at 12 weeks or more, and most all of my angoras are that age or older at the time of surgery. That is because angoras are growing more slowly than the normal coated ones, and we go by body weight as to the dosage of anesthesia. Sometimes an angora kit is big enough at 8 weeks, but 12 weeks or older is more common. I hold some ferrets back and have the surgery done at 3-5 months of age each summer. I agree with the ferrets.org policies and opinions on breeding. This is an organization in Vancouver, if I recall correctly. Their recommendation is that all ferrets sold must be neutered or spayed when leaving the farm, and I do agree with that. They also state that ferrets should have the scent glands removed in order to be pets, and I agree with that. They do not endorse showing ferrets at shows, and I agree with that, because it increases inbreeding. I would suggest that you request an older angora kit, and I will send you one with the surgery done at 12 weeks or more.
The early orders are from people wanting a younger kit, born first in the season. Later orders are usually people wanting an older kit, neutered or spayed later in the season. Normal coated males can be the size of their mother at 6-8 weeks of age, if they are healthy and growing well, so delaying the surgery on them is not necessary. My vets will not do surgery on a ferret that they feel is too small or too young. If you want a vet to do it, then you will need to know that they are experienced and fast enough that the ferret will not be given anesthesia for an extended period of time. My vets are very fast due to having a lot of experience with commercial ferret farms in Canada. Improper dosage, or the wrong type of anesthesia will kill the ferret, and older jills run the risk of internal bleeding and death. Males will experience a hormonal crash that puts them into a stupor for a few weeks, when done while they are in heat. I have never had but a couple of people follow through with getting the surgery done on their own as promised, because they cannot locate a vet and the price is too high, or they bring the ferret back to me and say it stinks too bad to keep. It would not be smelly if they had done the surgery as agreed, and at a younger age. Most people wait too long.
I do not use one particular facility. I am a farm, and have several buildings that I use, depending on the weather and need. Right now, we are at 60 to 70 degrees F (nice days), so I am using a fenced outdoor area where they are being brought into heat with natural light and fresh air, but prior to that, they were in two enclosed buildings at my house that have heat and air conditioning. They can be housed there during winter because they can be grouped together without fighting, in cages similar to those in homes (Ferret Nation). I also use playpens in winter. When kits are born, they are placed in my house until time for surgery, then afterwards until they go to homes, so that they are air conditioned and handled. I have a hugh building for fall and early winter use, and for the kits to be born in and housed until they are 3 weeks old and begin eating. When the weather gets cold or hot, they are moved to buildings at my house to keep them comfortable, and to keep me comfortable while working with them. Climate change here has been dramatic for several years now, so I am continually adjusting. Some people have one place, such as a basement or garage, or one building that is USDA licensed, but I do not require the USDA license since I do not sell to stores or labs, and I want to be free to move my ferrets around and give them a better quality of life--not stuck in one place, in one cage for life. On pretty days such as today, I put them over into outdoor cages and let them enjoy fresh air and time outdoors, and that is where I will be the rest of the day as well. I also put them into play pens when they are not in rut, but today, most are going into heat and will have to be caged one to a cage until August. I will send you some photos. Older ferrets not being bred are given time where they can play down on the ground and grassy areas, and are treated as pets, but I don't do that with ferrets to be bred to prevent parasites.
